Homes Long Ago vs Today

homes housing daily life shelter

Core Idea

The homes people live in have changed a lot over time. Long ago, many homes were small, had no running water or electricity, and were heated by fireplaces or wood-burning stoves. Families often lived together in just one or two rooms. Today, most homes have electricity, plumbing, heating and cooling systems, and many rooms. By comparing homes from the past to homes today, we learn how daily life has changed and what basic needs — like shelter and warmth — have always stayed the same.

How It's Best Learned

Show images of homes from different time periods — a log cabin, a Victorian house, a 1950s home, a modern home — and have children compare features. Build simple models of old-fashioned homes vs modern homes. Discuss: what would your day look like if your home had no electricity or running water? Read stories set in different time periods that describe homes and daily routines.

Common Misconceptions

Explainer

Close your eyes and think about your home. You probably have electric lights you can turn on and off, running water that comes out of faucets, a refrigerator to keep food cold, and a heater or air conditioner to keep you comfortable. Now imagine living without any of that. That is what life at home was like for most of history.

Long ago, many families lived in homes that seem very basic by today's standards. A log cabin or a simple farmhouse might have just one or two rooms for the entire family. There was no bathroom inside — people used an outhouse (a small building outside) and carried water from a well or stream. For light, they used candles or oil lamps. For warmth, they burned wood in a fireplace, which was often the center of the home.

Cooking was also very different. Without a microwave, oven, or refrigerator, people cooked over an open fire or on a wood-burning stove. They kept food fresh by drying it, salting it, or storing it in a cool cellar underground. Meals took much longer to prepare, and keeping food from spoiling was a daily challenge.

Over time, new inventions changed homes dramatically. Indoor plumbing brought running water and flush toilets inside the house. Electricity brought lights, refrigerators, washers and dryers, and eventually televisions and computers. Central heating replaced fireplaces as the main way to heat a home. Each of these changes made daily life easier and more comfortable.

But even though homes look very different now, the basic purpose of a home has never changed. A home is a place where families live together, share meals, keep warm and safe, and feel at home. Whether it is a one-room log cabin or a modern apartment, the idea of "home" is something people have always valued.
