Equally important is set consistency. Individual icons rarely appear in isolation — they exist within icon sets, toolbars, and navigation systems where they must work together as a visual family. This means every icon in a set should share the same stroke weight, corner radius, level of detail, visual density, and optical size. An icon drawn with 2px strokes next to one with 1px strokes looks broken; a filled icon next to an outlined icon creates visual hierarchy where none was intended. Consistency extends to the conceptual level as well: if your set uses resemblance icons for most actions, introducing an arbitrary symbol for one action creates confusion. Testing icons with real users — showing them without labels and asking "what does this do?" — is the most reliable way to discover whether your designs communicate what you intend, because the designer's familiarity with their own work makes them a poor judge of first-impression legibility.
