Instead of arranging elements spatially to create a reading order, you choreograph how elements enter, exit, and transform to guide attention through a sequence of moments. The foundation of believable motion is easing — the idea that real objects don't start and stop at constant speed. They accelerate from rest and decelerate before stopping. The mistake beginners make is treating duration as a style choice — "let's make everything 400ms because it feels smooth." Duration should be proportional to the distance and complexity of the change. The most important principle is restraint. Every animation competes for the user's limited attention. A loading spinner that bounces, pulses, and rotates simultaneously creates noise, not delight. The best motion design is almost invisible — the user doesn't notice the animation itself, they simply feel that the interface is coherent and responsive. Before adding any motion, ask: does this transition communicate something the user needs to know? If the answer is no, the animation is decoration, and decoration in motion is more distracting than decoration in static layout because the human visual system is wired to attend to movement.
