5 questions to test your understanding
A student has memorized all the ×3 facts but hasn't studied the ×4 table yet. Her teacher says she already knows 4 × 3. How is that possible?
Why is it NOT enough to simply understand that 5 × 8 means 'five groups of eight' if the goal is multiplication fluency?
Knowing that 3 × 4 = 4 × 3 (the commutative property) reduces the number of multiplication facts you need to memorize.
A student who can calculate 4 × 7 correctly by skip-counting in about 15 seconds has achieved fluency for that fact.
Why does being able to calculate a multiplication fact (by drawing groups or skip-counting) NOT mean you have achieved fluency for that fact?
