Postmodernism emerged as reaction to and extension of modernism. If modernism questioned whether reality could be represented accurately and pursued formal innovation to represent it more truthfully, postmodernism questioned whether truth itself could be known or represented. This philosophical skepticism led to different formal strategies.

Postmodernism embraced pastiche—mixing styles, genres, and cultural references without hierarchy. High literature was cited alongside popular culture. This reflected the belief that all meaning was constructed, all hierarchies arbitrary. Irony distanced from claims of seriousness. Rather than earnest pursuit of truth (modernist goal), postmodern works treated meaning-making as game.

Metafiction—narrative about narrative—became central postmodern technique. By interrupting story to comment on storytelling itself, metafiction foregrounded artificiality. This acknowledged what modernism sometimes denied: meaning is constructed, representations are not transparent, readers should recognize they're reading texts, not reality.

Unreliable narrators embody postmodern skepticism. If narrators cannot be trusted, readers cannot accept their version of truth. This puts interpretation burden on readers: make meaning, recognizing no authority guarantees truth. Postmodernism thus treated literature as game with form and meaning rather than serious pursuit of truth.

Postmodernism proved that skepticism toward truth need not lead to nihilism but could generate engaging literature. By foregrounding constructedness and treating meaning-making playfully, postmodern works paradoxically created powerful effects while questioning whether powerful effects prove anything.
