Prosopography systematically studies a group of individuals—all Roman senators, all 16th-century merchants, all colonial administrators—to understand broader patterns and social structure. By creating biographical databases with information on family, office, wealth, and connections, prosopographers reveal social mobility, networks, and power structures invisible in single biographies.

Prosopography sits at the intersection of these two: it is biography made systematic, a method that converts the individual-level question ("who was this person?") into a collective-level question ("who were these people, and what patterns emerge across them?"). The name comes from the Greek *prosopon* (face, person) and *graphia* (writing), but the method is less about writing lives than about building datasets from them.
The basic procedure is deceptively simple: identify a well-defined population of historical individuals (all Roman senatorial families across three centuries, all members of the English Parliament in the 17th century, all merchants registered in a particular Italian city-state), then systematically collect the same data points for each member of that population. The data typically includes social origin, family connections, educational background, officeholding career, marriage alliances, property and wealth, and any other attributes recorded in the sources. What emerges is not a narrative of any individual but a comparative database from which statistical and relational patterns become visible.
The method's power lies in what becomes visible only at the aggregate level. A single biography of a Roman senator tells you about one career trajectory. A prosopographical study of five hundred senators over three centuries shows whether the senatorial class was closed or permeable to newcomers, whether military service or legal expertise was the typical path to advancement, whether family networks clustered by region or crossed them, and whether the class became more or less diverse over time. These are structural questions about social mobility, elite formation, and power reproduction that cannot be answered by even the most meticulous individual biography. The method was pioneered in Roman history by Ronald Syme and Matthias Gelzer, and has since been applied to medieval monasteries, Renaissance merchant guilds, colonial administrators, and revolutionary movements.
The method's limitations are equally revealing. Prosopography depends on sources that record personal information systematically, which means it works best for populations that left extensive documentary footprints—precisely the literate, propertied, institutionally embedded groups who tend to dominate archives. Roman senators were recorded in inscriptions; medieval bishops appear in ecclesiastical registers; merchants figure in legal contracts. The anonymous, the poor, the mobile, and the illiterate are typically invisible to prosopographical analysis. The method also assumes that the population boundary is meaningful—that "all senators" or "all guild members" constitutes a coherent unit for comparison. When those categories were themselves contested or porous in historical reality, the database may impose a false tidiness. Used with these limits in view, prosopography is one of the most powerful tools in the historian's quantitative repertoire, capable of transforming impressionistic claims about social structure into empirically grounded arguments.
