A research question drives exploration and leads to a working thesis, which then guides writing and may be refined as research deepens. The strongest compositions often begin with a genuine question rather than a predetermined answer, allowing evidence to shape the argument. The thesis should answer the research question, making their relationship transparent to readers.
From your work on research question formulation, you know how to move from a broad topic to a focused, answerable question — one that is neither too vague ("What is climate change?") nor too narrow ("What was the CO₂ reading on March 3, 2022?"). And from advanced thesis development, you know that a strong thesis makes a specific, arguable claim rather than just announcing a topic. This topic is about the relationship between those two things — and why that relationship has to run in a particular direction.
The key principle is that the research question comes first, and the thesis is its answer. This sounds obvious, but it is routinely reversed in student writing. When you begin with a thesis — "Social media causes depression" — you have already decided the answer before gathering evidence. The "research" then becomes a search for confirmation rather than genuine inquiry. Beginning with a genuinely open question ("Under what conditions does social media use correlate with depressive symptoms, and what accounts for variation across populations?") leaves room for the evidence to surprise you. The resulting thesis will be more specific, more defensible, and more interesting because it emerged from actual inquiry.
A working thesis is not the same as your final thesis. When you start writing, you need a provisional answer to your research question — something to test against the evidence you gather. The working thesis is a hypothesis, not a commitment. As you research, some sources will confirm it, others will complicate it, and some will contradict it. Good researchers update their working thesis in response to evidence rather than discarding inconvenient evidence to protect the thesis they started with. The final thesis represents where the inquiry actually led.
The relationship between the question and the thesis should be transparent to readers. A well-constructed essay announces what question it is answering (often in the introduction, either explicitly or implicitly) and then delivers a thesis that answers precisely that question. When readers cannot see the question behind the thesis, the argument often feels arbitrary — the writer seems to be asserting a position without explaining why that position was worth investigating in the first place. Making the question visible gives the thesis its motivation. This is why revision often involves going back to check that the thesis you landed on still answers the question you set out to investigate — or, if the question evolved during research, updating the introduction to reflect the question the paper actually answers.
