Proud is the warm, tall feeling you get when you do something that was hard for you — like tying your shoes for the first time, being brave when you were scared, or sharing when you did not want to. You do not have to be the best at something to feel proud. Trying hard and not giving up is worth celebrating.
Create a 'I did it!' wall where children add drawings or notes about things they are proud of. During circle time, ask each child to share something they tried hard at this week. Celebrate effort and courage, not just results — 'You kept trying even when it was frustrating — that takes real strength!'
Proud is the warm, tall feeling you get inside when you do something that was hard for you. You might feel proud when you tie your shoes for the first time. You might feel proud when you are brave even though you are scared. You might feel proud when you share your toy even though you did not want to. Proud makes you feel warm inside and like you are standing a little bit taller.
Here is something wonderful: you do not have to be the best or win anything to feel proud. You do not have to be better than everyone else. You just have to try hard. You just have to do something that was hard for YOU. If learning to ride a bicycle is hard for you, you can be proud of yourself when you do it. Your friend might already know how to ride, but that does not matter. Your effort is what counts.
Something special to understand: being proud of yourself is NOT the same as bragging or showing off. When you brag, you are trying to make other people think you are better. When you are proud of yourself, you are just noticing the hard work you did. Being proud of yourself is healthy. It feels good and helps you believe in yourself.
Another amazing truth: small things are worth being proud of too, not just big accomplishments. You can be proud of being patient when you were waiting. You can be proud of helping a friend. You can be proud of trying something even though it was scary. You can be proud of sharing, or including someone, or saying sorry. Big and small — all of it counts.
When you are proud of yourself, you are learning that your effort matters. You are learning that hard things are worth doing. You are learning to notice the good things about yourself. And that is one of the most important things you will ever learn.
