Existentialism is a philosophical movement centered on the idea that human existence precedes essence — we are not born with a fixed nature or purpose but must create meaning through our choices and actions. Existentialists emphasize freedom, responsibility, anxiety, authenticity, and the confrontation with absurdity or death. Though diverse in their conclusions (Kierkegaard was religious, Sartre was atheist, Beauvoir was feminist), existentialists share the conviction that abstract philosophical systems miss what matters most: the concrete, lived experience of being a particular person facing irreducible choices.

Existentialism emerged in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries as a reaction against philosophical systems that seemed to reduce human life to abstractions. Hegel had built a vast system in which individual existence was a moment in the unfolding of Absolute Spirit. The natural sciences were explaining human behavior in terms of biological drives and social forces. Against these tendencies, existentialists insisted on the irreducibility of the individual: you are not a case of a universal, not a node in a system, not a product of deterministic forces. You are a concrete person who must decide how to live, and no theory can make that decision for you.

The rallying cry of existentialism is Sartre's formula: existence precedes essence. Traditional metaphysics assumed that things have essences — fixed natures that determine what they are. A knife has the essence of cutting; a human has the essence of rationality (Aristotle) or of being made in God's image (Christianity). Sartre reversed this: for humans, there is no essence that precedes our existence. We are not born with a purpose or a nature — we are "thrown" into the world and must create our own meaning through action. This is radical freedom, and it carries radical responsibility: if there is no human nature that compels me to act in certain ways, then I am fully responsible for what I choose to become.

This freedom is not experienced as liberation but as anxiety (Angst). Kierkegaard described the "dizziness of freedom" — the vertigo that comes from recognizing that nothing prevents you from making any choice, including terrible ones. Heidegger analyzed anxiety as the mood that reveals the groundlessness of existence: when anxiety strips away our everyday absorption in tasks and roles, we confront the fact that our existence has no built-in justification. Sartre called it "anguish" — the awareness that we are "condemned to be free," that even our values are chosen rather than given. The natural response is to flee this anxiety into what Heidegger called the "they-self" (das Man) and Sartre called "bad faith": pretending that our choices are dictated by circumstances, social roles, or human nature rather than owning them as free decisions.

Authenticity is the existentialist ideal: living in full awareness of one's freedom and finitude, making choices without hiding behind excuses or conventions. Authenticity does not mean finding a "true self" — that would presuppose the kind of fixed essence existentialism rejects. It means the manner of existing: confronting rather than evading the anxiety of freedom, taking responsibility rather than deferring to "what one does." The diversity of existentialist thought becomes apparent in what different thinkers build on this foundation: Kierkegaard finds authenticity in the leap of faith, Nietzsche in self-overcoming and the creation of values, Heidegger in being-toward-death, Sartre in radical commitment, and Beauvoir in recognizing that authentic freedom requires recognizing the freedom of others.
