Sounds can be high like a bird chirping or low like thunder rumbling. Pitch is how high or low a sound is. Music mixes high and low sounds together to create melodies that go up and down.
Slide a finger up and down while singing to show pitch going higher and lower. Listen to a xylophone or piano and identify which sounds are high and which are low. Play a game where children reach up high for high sounds and crouch down for low sounds.
High and low pitch are about where a sound sits in your ears. High sounds go "up" in your ears, and low sounds go "down" in your ears. This is called the pitch of a sound. Every sound has a pitch, whether it is music or just something you hear in the world!
A high sound feels like it is reaching up into your ears. When you hear a bird singing or a whistle blowing, that is a high sound! If you make your voice very squeaky or squeak like a mouse, that is a high pitch. A small bell or a xylophone often makes high sounds. High sounds seem bright and sparkly to your ears. When you go "eeeee" with your voice, you are making a high sound.
A low sound feels deep and down in your ears. A big drum makes a low sound. A foghorn is low. When you growl or make your voice very deep and rumbling, you are making a low sound. Bass singers have very low voices. A tuba in a band makes low sounds. Low sounds seem warm and rich to your ears. When you go "ooooo" in the deepest voice you can, you are making a low sound.
Here is an important idea: pitch and volume are different! You can make a high sound that is loud, or a high sound that is quiet. You can make a low sound that is loud, or a low sound that is quiet. A tiny bell might be high and quiet. A trumpet might be high and loud. A distant drum might be low and quiet. A bass drum might be low and loud. All these combinations are possible!
When you listen to music, you will hear many different pitches all happening together. The high sounds make a sparkly feel. The low sounds make a solid, warm feel. Together, all the pitches create a beautiful and interesting sound. Try singing a simple song like "Mary Had a Little Lamb." Now sing the same song, but make your voice as high and squeaky as you can. Then sing it as low and deep as you can. The melody stays the same, but your pitch changed, so it sounds different!
