On a single tape, you'd repeatedly scan from the current leftmost unmarked symbol to the rightmost, comparing and marking as you go — an O(n²) process. With two tapes, you copy the input onto the second tape, move the second head to the end, and then scan both tapes simultaneously inward, comparing characters in O(n) time. The multi-tape model lets you think about computation the way you'd think about it with pen and paper: keep different pieces of information in different places and consult them as needed.

The remarkable result is that multi-tape machines are no more powerful than single-tape machines in terms of what they can compute. Special markers track where each virtual head is positioned.
