Think of a design system as an ecosystem with feedback loops. When you change your base font size from 16px to 18px, that change does not stay local. It propagates through your type scale, which shifts your heading sizes, which changes how much content fits in a card component, which affects your grid breakpoints, which may push a layout from three columns to two on tablet screens. A designer who thinks in components sees a font-size change. A designer who thinks in systems sees a cascade of consequences and can predict — or at least investigate — where the ripple will land. Systems thinking also means accepting that you cannot design everything upfront. Real systems are emergent — patterns reveal themselves only after real use. The goal is not a perfect blueprint on day one, but a design architecture that is resilient to change: loosely coupled components, well-named tokens, clear layering of decisions from global to local. When a new requirement arrives, a systemically designed product absorbs the change with minimal rework, while a collection of ad hoc components fractures. The discipline is ongoing: every time you add a component, you ask not just "does this look right?" but "does this fit the system, and what will it affect?"
