The well-ordering theorem (Zermelo, 1904) states that every set can be well-ordered — given any set A, there exists a linear order on A such that every non-empty subset has a least element. This theorem is equivalent to the axiom of choice over ZF: each implies the other. The well-ordering theorem implies that every set's cardinality can be compared with any other (the infinite cardinals are linearly ordered), and it provides the basis for defining cardinal numbers as initial ordinals. The proof strategy uses the Axiom of Choice and transfinite induction — both of which you have studied. Choose a choice function f that selects one element from any non-empty subset of A. Now build the well-ordering by transfinite recursion: set a₀ = f(A), then a₁ = f(A \ {a₀}), then a₂ = f(A \ {a₀, a₁}), and so on through all ordinals until A is exhausted. The resulting sequence enumerates A, and the order in which elements were picked defines a well-order. The critical step where AC is irreplaceable: without a choice function, you cannot make the infinitely many selections this construction requires simultaneously.
The equivalence with AC is one of the landmark results of set theory. The forward direction — AC implies well-ordering — is the construction above. The reverse is slicker: if every set can be well-ordered, then given any collection of non-empty sets {Aᵢ}, well-order their union, and let f(Aᵢ) = the least element of Aᵢ under that well-order. This defines a choice function, giving you AC. Neither direction is trivial, and together they show that AC and the well-ordering theorem are simply two ways of expressing the same deep structural fact about sets.
The philosophical and foundational significance is enormous. The well-ordering theorem implies that cardinal numbers are linearly ordered — for any two sets, one's cardinality is ≤ the other's. Without it, there could be incomparable infinities with no size relationship at all. It also implies that every set's cardinality equals some initial ordinal (a cardinal number in the von Neumann sense), giving the hierarchy ℵ₀, ℵ₁, ℵ₂, … a solid foundation. Every cardinal arithmetic fact you will study downstream rests on this theorem: the well-ordering theorem is the bridge between the abstract axioms of set theory and the concrete universe of infinite cardinalities.
