Graph products combine two graphs to produce a new graph with vertices from the Cartesian product of vertex sets, and edges determined by rules. Common products include Cartesian product (edges when both coordinates are adjacent), tensor product (edges when both coordinates are connected), and strong product. These operations generate important graph families with predictable spectral and structural properties.
Start with small examples (4-vertex graphs) and compute products explicitly by listing all vertex pairs and adjacency rules.
Different product types have different edge rules; the Cartesian product is not the same as tensor product despite both using coordinate multiplication.
You already know that a graph is a set of vertices and edges, and that it can be represented as an adjacency matrix or adjacency list. Graph products take this foundation and ask a structural question: given two graphs G and H, can we build a new, larger graph by combining them in a systematic way? The answer is yes — multiple ways, in fact — and each construction rule produces a different "product graph" with its own structure and properties.
All graph products share the same vertex set: the Cartesian product of the two vertex sets. If G has vertices {1, 2} and H has vertices {a, b}, then every product graph on these two graphs has vertex set {(1,a), (1,b), (2,a), (2,b)}. Four vertices, one for each pairing. Where the products differ is in which of those vertex pairs are connected by edges.
The Cartesian product G □ H adds an edge between (u, a) and (v, b) when *either* u = v and a–b is an edge in H, *or* a = b and u–v is an edge in G. In other words, two vertices are adjacent when they differ in exactly one coordinate and that coordinate-change is a valid edge. This is the same rule that connects cells in a grid — think of a 3×3 grid graph as the Cartesian product of two path graphs P₃. The Cartesian product preserves a lot of structure from both factors and tends to produce well-connected, regular graphs.
The tensor product (also called the direct or categorical product) G × H is stricter: it connects (u, a) to (v, b) only when *both* u–v is an edge in G *and* a–b is an edge in H. You need valid moves in *both* graphs simultaneously. Think of it like a knight's move on a chessboard defined by two independent graphs: you have to advance in both dimensions at once. Tensor products tend to produce sparser graphs and arise naturally in problems about graph homomorphisms and coloring.
The strong product G ⊠ H is the union: two vertices are adjacent if they're adjacent in either the Cartesian or the tensor product — i.e., when they're adjacent or identical in *each* coordinate, with at least one adjacency. This makes it the densest of the three. These constructions aren't just abstract play — they model multi-dimensional networks, parallel computer architectures, and relationship structures where relationships in two independent systems interact.
