Orbital stability, chaotic diffusion, and resonance crossing depend sensitively on initial conditions, mass ratios, and orbital parameters, necessitating ensemble simulations to predict system evolution over gigayear timescales.
Kepler's laws and the two-body problem give you exact, closed-form solutions for one planet orbiting one star — clean ellipses that repeat forever. The moment you add a third body, that analytical tidiness vanishes. In a real planetary system with multiple planets, every body exerts a gravitational tug on every other body at every instant. These mutual perturbations may be tiny compared to the star's dominant pull, but over millions or billions of orbits they accumulate, nudging eccentricities and inclinations in ways that no algebraic formula can fully predict. This is the N-body problem, and solving it requires the numerical integration techniques you studied in differential equations and systems of ODEs.
The practical approach is to march forward in small time steps, computing the gravitational acceleration on each body from all others, updating velocities and positions, then repeating. Symplectic integrators — algorithms that exactly conserve the geometric structure of Hamiltonian mechanics — are the workhorse tools because they preserve energy and angular momentum over long integrations far better than generic methods like Runge-Kutta. Even so, tiny numerical errors compound over billions of steps, and the underlying dynamics are genuinely chaotic: two simulations started with planet positions differing by a millimeter can diverge to completely different orbital configurations after a hundred million years. This is not a failure of the code — it is a fundamental property of gravitational N-body systems.
Because individual trajectories are unreliable over geological timescales, planetary dynamicists run ensemble simulations — hundreds or thousands of integrations with slightly varied initial conditions — and look for statistical patterns. Questions shift from "where will Mercury be in 5 billion years?" to "what is the probability that Mercury's eccentricity grows large enough for it to cross Venus's orbit?" Resonance crossings are critical events in these ensembles. You already know from orbital resonance that commensurabilities in orbital periods can either stabilize or destabilize configurations. In N-body integrations, slow drifts in orbital elements can push planets into or through resonances, sometimes triggering sudden jumps in eccentricity that cascade through the entire system.
The solar system itself sits on the edge of long-term instability. N-body simulations show that Jupiter and Saturn's near 5:2 resonance ("the Great Inequality") drives slow oscillations in the inner planets' orbits, and there is roughly a 1% chance that Mercury's orbit becomes unstable before the Sun dies. These results — impossible to obtain from two-body theory alone — demonstrate why numerical N-body integration is the essential tool for understanding planetary system architecture, from the long-term stability of our own solar system to the survival of tightly packed exoplanet systems discovered by Kepler and TESS.
